Finding Your Perfect Red Lip Shade

Anybody that knows me, knows that a red lip to me is my nude. I feel so comfortable in a red lip, but I know that a lot of people don't. The most common reason they don't feel good in a bold lip is because they are wearing the wrong shade for them. Whilst you can wear whatever lipstick shade you want to, there are a few things that can help you find the perfect one.

Find you undertone
Undertones of lipsticks

The first step is to figure out what your undertone is. Are you warm, cool, or neutral.

  • Warm undertones - suit reds with orange

  • Cool undertones - Suit blue-toned or berry-toned reds. That being said, I hate the look of a blue-toned lip on myself!

  • Neutral undertones - The lucky bunch of people that can usually pull off a range of red shades.

Experiment with different finishes

Red lipsticks come in different finishes: matte, satin, glossy, or sheer. Try out different finishes to see which one you prefer and which works best for your lips and overall look.

  • Matte - longer lasting and velvety finish. Not the best for dry lips as they tend to emphasise lines.

  • Satin - in-between matte and glossy finishes. Smooth and creamy. Can be layered to intensity the colour.

  • Glossy - shiny and plumper looking lips.

  • Sheer - lightweight and natural feel on the lips. Only a subtle wash of colour.

Test lots of shades

Swatch different colours on the back of your hand and see how they appear against your skin tone. Ask a beauty consultant or makeup artist to help you out! MAC Cosmetics and Charlotte Tilbury offer virtual try-on systems which are also great.

Wear lip liner

I swear by lip liner. Apply a lip liner in a matching or complementary shade to define your lips and prevent any bleeding of the lipstick. It also helps with longevity.

Rock the red

It's going to be scary and you might feel like everybody is looking at you but trust me, they are only watching your confidence to rock such a stunning and bold shade.

It'll be a bit hit and miss to find the right shade, but you'll get there.

Lots of love,
